RunPod vs Vast.ai: The Honest Comparison (We Track Both)

RunPod charges $0.46/hr for an RTX 4090, Vast.ai charges $0.33/hr. But price isn't everything. We compared reliability, UX, and hidden costs.

Two Marketplace Giants, Very Different Approaches

RunPod and Vast.ai are the two dominant GPU marketplace providers. Both let you rent GPUs from distributed hosts at prices far below AWS and GCP. But they serve different audiences and make different trade-offs. We track pricing for both daily — here's the honest comparison.

Price Comparison: Vast.ai Is Cheaper (Usually)

GPURunPodVast.aiSavings
RTX 4090$0.46/hr$0.17/hr spot63%
A100 80GB$1.64/hr$0.09/hr spot95%
H100 80GB$3.49/hr$1.30/hr spot63%
RTX 3090$0.23/hr$0.07/hr spot70%

Vast.ai is consistently 50-95% cheaper, especially on spot instances. The marketplace model with individual hosts competing on price drives costs down aggressively. RunPod's pricing is more stable and predictable, but you pay a premium for that consistency.

User Experience: RunPod Wins

RunPod has a significantly more polished UI, better documentation, a serverless GPU product, and template-based deployments that work out of the box. Vast.ai's interface is more utilitarian — you get a list of available machines with specs and prices, and you SSH in. RunPod is the better choice if you value developer experience and don't want to debug networking issues on random hosts.

Reliability: Neither Is AWS

Both are marketplace providers, which means your GPU is running on someone else's hardware. Machines can go offline, hosts can reboot, and spot instances get preempted. Vast.ai has higher variance — the cheapest hosts may have slower internet, older CPUs, or less reliable uptime. RunPod's "Secure Cloud" tier offers dedicated hardware with better reliability, but at higher prices that start approaching mid-tier managed providers.

When to Use Each

  • Vast.ai: Budget-conscious research, experimentation, interruptible workloads, spot instance power users who can handle host variability
  • RunPod: Production inference (serverless), teams who want managed experience, developers who prefer polished UX over absolute lowest price
  • Neither: Mission-critical production workloads with SLA requirements — use Lambda Labs, CoreWeave, or a hyperscaler instead
