Methodology

Data source. Every 6 hours we scrape live cloud GPU pricing from 54+ providers — including AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, RunPod, Vast.ai, Lambda Labs, CoreWeave, Crusoe, Nebius, and dozens more. The full dataset is published as /gpu-data.json.

Daily snapshots. Once per day we collapse the live dataset into a snapshot — min, average, 25th percentile, and 75th percentile for every GPU model with at least one valid listing. The full snapshot history is published as /price-history.json.

Index calculation. For each tracked GPU, we set the baseline = 25th percentile price on the first available snapshot (2026-02-22). Each subsequent day's index value = (today's 25th percentile / baseline) × 100. The composite index is the unweighted average of all tracked GPU index values on that day.

Why 25th percentile? The cheapest listing (min) is often a fleeting spot deal that's gone in minutes. The average is dragged upward by hyperscaler list prices that few buyers actually pay. The 25th percentile captures what a careful buyer can realistically obtain — a more honest signal than either extreme.

Limitations. The index reflects publicly listed prices only. Private enterprise contracts (CoreWeave, Oracle, hyperscaler reserved capacity) are not visible to us and may diverge. Spot prices are highly volatile intraday; daily snapshots smooth this but don't eliminate it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the GPU Tracker Price Index?

The GPU Tracker Price Index measures cloud GPU rental prices relative to a fixed baseline (February 22, 2026 = 100). An index value of 80 means current prices are 20% below baseline. We compute the index from the 25th-percentile price across all instances of each GPU model in our live dataset.

How often is the index updated?

The underlying GPU pricing dataset refreshes every 6 hours by scraping live prices from 54+ cloud providers. The index page recomputes from the latest snapshot on each visit. Historical snapshots are stored daily.

Why use the 25th percentile instead of the minimum or average?

The minimum price often reflects rare spot or marketplace deals that vanish in minutes. The average is skewed by hyperscaler list prices that nobody actually pays. The 25th percentile captures the price a careful buyer can realistically obtain — a more honest signal of where the market is.

Can I embed the index on my own site?

Yes. Copy the embed snippet from this page and paste it into your blog, README, or dashboard. The badge links back to the live index. Attribution to GPU Tracker is appreciated but not required.

How is this different from your live pricing table?

The live table shows current prices across 5,000+ instances right now. The Price Index compresses that into one number per GPU and shows how it has moved over time — useful for budgeting, contract negotiation, and tracking long-term market direction.

Where does the historical data come from?

GPU Tracker has been recording daily snapshots of the full pricing dataset since February 2026. Each snapshot captures min, average, and 25/75 percentile prices for every GPU model with at least one valid listing on that day.
